Concrete in Public Housing

Europe: 1920-1940

The development of public housing projects in Europe became prominent during the period between World War I and World War II.  This was due to local governments establishing new housing policies as many cities sought rejuvenation.  A key component in the design of these apartments was reinforced concrete construction.  Public housing buildings were ultimately a reflection of the Modernist movement at this time.  In one way or another, this took shape in interacting with or creating a new local aesthetic.
